Understanding the Stages of Gum Disease
Gum disease is an inflammatory condition commonly caused by plaque buildup around and below the gumline.
The earliest stage is called gingivitis. It may cause redness, swelling or bleeding during brushing and flossing. Gingivitis can often be managed successfully when it is identified and treated early.
If inflammation continues, the condition may progress to periodontitis. This advanced form of gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria collect.
Over time, periodontitis can damage the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place. This may eventually lead to loose teeth or tooth loss.
